The Earth, Sun and the Sky are part of the Universe
The Earth
The Earth, Sun and the Sky are part of the Universe. The earth is made up land and water. It is round in shape. Some parts of the land rise above to form mountains and hills. Flat lands are called plains. Plants grow well here.
There are places on land where very few plant grow. The land in such places are covered with sand. Such places are hot and dry. They are called deserts. There is lots of water on the earth. Ponds, rivers, seas and oceans are the main water bodies.
The Sky
The vast open space above the earth is called the sky. It looks blue in the day and black at night. We can see the sun in the day sky. Moon and stars can be seen in the night sky.
The Sun
The sun is a big ball of fire. It is very hot. The sun gives us heat and light. When the sun rises in the morning, it brings us day. When the sun sets in the evening, it brings us night.
The Moon
We see the moon at night. It looks like a big white ball. It is smaller than the sun. The moon has no air or water. Many people have landed on the moon. You will need a rocket to go the moon. Look at the sky at night everyday. Does the moon always have a round shape? the moon changes its shape from Full moon to Half Moon to Crescent Moon to New Moon.
When we see that the moon is fully round, we call it full moon. When we see that the moon is half a round, we call it half moon. When it looks like a slice of melon, we call it a crescent moon. When we can see no moon at all, we call it new moon.
The Stars
We see stars twinkling in the sky at night. Stars are very big. They look small to us because they are far away from us. There are so many stars in the sky that we cannot count them. Twinkling means Shining with a gleam that keeps changing from bright to faint.
